Add fuel economy to the list of improvements that the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Sonata
boasts over its predecessor, as the EPA has released fuel economy
ratings for the Sonata. In standard trim with the 2.4-liter
four-cylinder engine, the 2015 Hyundai Sonata is rated at 25/37/29 mpg
(city/highway/combined).
This is a bump of 1 mpg city, 2
mpg highway, and 1 mpg combined compared with the equivalent 2014
Hyundai Sonata. This rating only applies to the base Sonata SE model;
the Sonata Sport and Limited trim levels are rated at 24/35/28 mpg
(city/highway/combined)—the same rating as the outgoing car—due to
equipment differences that make these models slightly heavier than the
base car. Fuel economy ratings for the more powerful 2.0-liter
turbocharged four-cylinder available on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport are not yet available. The
slight bump in mpg puts the 2015 Hyundai Sonata right in the mix with
other family sedans in terms of fuel economy. The only four-cylinder
models with higher ratings are the 2015 Mazda 6 (26/38/30 mpg
city/highway/combined) and the 2015 Nissan Altima (27/38/31 mpg
city/highway/combined), and the 2015 Sonata is right on par with other
midsizers like the 2014 Honda Accord (27/36/30 mpg
city/highway/combined) and the 2014 Ford Fusion (25/37/29 mpg
city/highway/combined).
This all makes the 2015 Hyundai Sonata a
worthy competitor in the contentious midsize segment, at least on paper.
Along with this competitive fuel economy number, its starting price of $21,960
with destination makes it the second cheapest midsize sedan on the
market, behind the 2014 Mazda 6 which costs just $175 less. The 2015
Hyundai Sonata is on sale now.
