15 Sonata Production

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Employees at Hyundai's Alabama auto factory will work two Saturdays this month, as the plant ramps up output amid the rollout of the redesigned Sonata sedan.

Last month, the Montgomery facility turned out a total of 31,160 vehicles, which were nearly even split between Sonatas and Elantra compacts.

Prior to June, the plant had scheduled only four production Saturdays this year because plant engineers needed the weekends to begin re-programming the robots for the new Sonata, as well as general preventative maintenance, plant spokesman Robert Burns said.

Hyundai Genesis Home run

Hyundai makes some especially nice vehicles, properly executed, well-equipped, reasonably priced.

The Genesis premium/luxury sedan, redesigned for the 2015 model year, is foremost among those — well, maybe not so reasonably priced now that Hyundai has raised the window-sticker numbers.

The base V-6 model is up $2,830 to $38,950. The V-8 rises $4,130 to $52,450.

All-wheel drive (AWD) is an option for the first time on the Genesis, but only with the V-6. Eventually with the V-8, too, Hyundai hints, with no timetable.

Hyundai greenest automaker

 


Combined car company Hyundai-Kia, both owned by South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group, overtook Honda Motor as the "greenest" automaker in the U.S., according to a report today by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

For the first time since UCS began tracking the environmental friendliness of automakers in 1998, all eight major companies it rates improved their scores in the past year.

Hyundai and Kia are marketed as two separate brands in the U.S. and are operated separately. Elsewhere, they are considered two brands sold by a single, combined automaker.
